Three names spring to mind.
- Robin Williams. Obviously, it’s a ridiculous comparison because he was one of the most talented people who ever lived, but he was a target I aimed at as a kid. (I had almost every line of Live At The Met memorized in my teens.) Also, I slip into character and do long, improvisational soliloquies, which is part of his influence.
- Steven Wright. Because of his orthogonal thinking.
- Okay, this one’s the most accurate, but I hate admitting it, because he’s turned into a right-wing scumbag in the 21st century… Dennis Miller. His vocabulary and dense layers of rapid-fire references always appealed to me.
