I’m only halfway through it so far, but as with everything Scott Frank does, I’m enjoying it. For someone who wrote a goofily over-the-top movie like Dead Again, Frank shows an amazing restraint in TQG… I keep expecting some grand, melodramatic turn that never comes. It’s just an interesting girl, leading a sad-yet-still-fantastical pastiche of ‘60s life that oscillates endlessly between quiet desperation and bookish ecstasy.
(My one quibble? It’s hard enough to take Jojen Reed seriously in a duster and a fedora… that wispy moustache makes it impossible.)
And yes, she’s adorable. Those eyes are amazing.
