Hm. This is difficult.
- Song: “Satisfied” is the moment when Hamilton finally clicked with me. Up to that point, it was fine and interesting, but I wasn’t inspired. Then the wedding happens, the stage turntable really comes alive, the storytelling becomes more ambitious… and Renée Goldsberry blows the fucking roof off the building. But “Wait For It” and “Dear Theodosia” are almost as good. My favorite song to sing, though, is “You’ll Be Back”… I hated him on Glee, but Groff is brilliant, and in fairness, Glee was basically a study in how to take talented young people and make them annoying.
- Character: Even more difficult to choose, but I’ll say… Thomas Jefferson. Daveed Diggs invests him with so much life that it’s possible to see all sides of the man: the towering genius, the arrogant self-centered shithead, the blindly stubborn contrarian, and the morally bankrupt humanist philosopher. It’s a magnetic performance.
- There’s something wrong with you if you don’t enjoy it. It’s just too good.
