The Last American Virgin (1982), dir. Boaz Davidson

I remember being in middle school and finding a VHS copy of The Last American Virgin buried in the back of the coat closet. It wasn’t a bootleg or a rental, so for reasons never made clear, my dad appears to have bought a copy of the movie.

This is surprising, first because to my recollection, TLAV wasn’t very good; it was trying to capitalize on the success of Porky’s the year before and aiming for a whiff of artistic relevance like Fast Times At Ridgemont High, but it was never as gleefully dirty as the former, nor as thoughtful as the latter. The result is a sex comedy that is never quite hot as a fantasy, and a bummer when it aims for realism.

The bigger surprise was that my cheap-ass dad bought any movie at all. VHS films of that era were “priced for rental” at $75+… it just wasn’t practical to own a movie unless you were a big fan. Which makes me wonder if my old man hid the tape because he was embarrassed about the titties, or because he was embarrassed about how much he paid to look at the titties.

A mystery for the ages, I suppose.
