why email?

Because different forms of communication have different strengths. And when it comes to getting a look into someone’s inner life from a distance, my preferred form of communication involves well-considered, thoughtfully arranged paragraphs written by someone brave enough to expose herself with words.
The actual transport mechanism doesn’t matter —such communication need not travel over SMTP— if the long-form, asynchronous exchange of thought and feeling is maintained.
