Honestly?
My guess is that he knew all along that the relationship had a limited shelf-life, so refraining from that particular intimacy seemed more honest to him. Taking your virginity would have felt like leading you on, promising you a future he knew he couldn’t provide. Ultimately, he decided it was better to deprive you than lie to you.
