Oh, and speaking of The World According To Garp… the vast majority of you have never heard of it, but you must watch it sometime. I probably saw it 20 times as a kid, and its arguably the saddest movie ever made that happens to star the funniest man alive; even though he was still honing his craft, nothing Robin made after it more perfectly encapsulated his gifts than the tragically funny, bitterly cheerful Garp.
And I’m curious about what my trans followers think of the movie’s treatment of transfolk? There are likely tons of problematic things about it, starting with casting a very cis John Lithgow… I feel like the movie wanted to be compassionate, but 1982 was 1982, and I’m sure they stumbled in many places. On the upside, it was John Fucking Lithgow, who is awesome in every way, and I’ve gotta say, I walked away from my many viewings of Garp with nothing but affection and respect for the character of Roberta… in a movie full of weirdos and desperate mundanes, she’s the most “normal”, stable person around. So for whatever they got wrong, I know they left a positive impression in some minds.
