Following Game of Thrones over the years has been like watching second-tier Bake-Off contestants start really strong on a technical challenge, get confused by the incomplete recipe, run out of time at the end, and ultimately serve up half-baked sludge just so they can get credit for the attempt.

You tried, Weiss & Benioff, but it’s more than a bit claggy, and I really can’t see the layers.

Is it Sarah Michelle Gellar you like, or just Buffy?

Interesting question. I wouldn’t say just Buffy… SMG was cute as a button in Simply Irresistible, for example. Hell, I watched every episode of The Crazy Ones, so I must be at least a little fond of her.

But Buffy-the-show will always be special to me, and Buffy-the-character will always be more than the actor who portrayed her.

The OA (Season 2)

The OA

I’ve decided Brit Marling is a genius. I had my suspicions after watching Another Earth many years ago, where she took both a well-worn premise and the dubious charisma of William Mapother and from them built a beautifully small movie about the biggest of events. But after watching The OA Part 2, I’m convinced she’s the real deal.

She’s out there making feminine —and feminist, I suppose, but more than that— sci-fi, something that very seldom reaches the mainstream, and she’s doing it fearlessly. And for a show that was never really meant to be an ongoing thing, Part 2 does an impressive job of ex post facto world building.

Watch it. It’s weird, but in a wonderful way.

“Evolution Revolution Love” — Tricky

Okay, first, how can this song be 18 years old? An entire generation has grown up in that time… way to make me feel old, guys.

Second, I don’t think we really appreciated how much the low resolution and color bleeding of CRT televisions helped make the visual effects of the era effective… the face-changing thing from this video looked a little less goofy when you couldn’t make out the details.
