Last week, I watched Grease 2 for the first time in 30 years. And viewing it with adult eyes, two things jumped out at me:

The former is easy (tentatively, Bloodsport, Ong Bak, The Blood of Heroes, Enter the Dragon) but for the latter all I’ve got right now is Eyes Wide Shut and Belle de Jour.
It feels unfair that I never give Ally Sheedy credit for being a part of many of the movies I loved as a kid. I’m going to say Inside Out. Although Monsters Inc. is a sentimental second place.
No. But I did sit in a darkened theater in 1985 and watch Barry Gordy’s The Last Dragon.
…and then walked around shouting “Who’s the master? Sho’nuff!” for a month after.
Cherry is incredibly well-acted and beautifully made… it’s unfortunate that its alternate title could be 500 Days of Full Metal Jacket. Both the Russos and Tom Holland have now ably demonstrated their range, and someday I hope they collaborate on a movie that isn’t a retread with an unearned ending.… Read the rest “Cherry & I Care A Lot”

The New Mutants is far from great; the casting is flawed in places, they tried to stir a couple incongruous romances into the mix, two-fifths of the cast are superheroically superfluous, and it’s probably impossible to really know what’s happening if you’re not watching it with a moldering old man who bought the first 75 issues of the comic off a spinner rack in the ‘80s.… Read the rest “The New Mutants”
