Tawny Kitaen (1961-2021)
In 1987, hair-metal had reached its zenith, David Coverdale was the closest thing MTV had to Robert Plant —who had been busy making ‘50s-style pop with The Honeydrippers earlier in the decade— and Tawny Kitaen was The Girl.
She did it kind of backwards.… Read the rest “Tawny Kitaen (1961-2021)”

DMX — 1970-2021
DMX, gravel-voiced hip-hop star who battled law and addiction, dies at 50
I wasn’t the biggest fan, and the last time I remember seeing him was when he walked away from a live performance at the VMAs or something.
But “Who We Be” was one of my favorite songs of the 2000s, while “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” and “Where The Hood At” spent a lot of time on my playlists.… Read the rest “DMX — 1970-2021”
Just drop me on the floor and sweep my broken pieces into the trash when you’re done
And it’s all right, yeah, I’ll be fine
Don’t worry ‘bout this heart of mine
Just take your love and hit the road
There’s nothing you can do or say
You’re gonna break my heart anyway
So just leave the pieces when you go
—The Wreckers – “Leave The Pieces”
I think you mentioned sometime back that you watch Tik Toks, do you have a favourite gen z song?

If it needs to be late 20teens stuff, though? Fuck, I dunno.… Read the rest “I think you mentioned sometime back that you watch Tik Toks, do you have a favourite gen z song?”
Controversial Cold Take
It’s been 40 years, and I still say Satan totally won the fiddle battle in “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” It wasn’t even close. That song is pure anti-Devil propaganda.
Bonus take: Lucias Cray may have been a greedy old man, but I wish his ghost nothing but the best in defending his lost treasure from interlopers.… Read the rest “Controversial Cold Take”
Best thing to listen to during sex??
I’m a simple man with simple tastes.
- The Eagles – Hotel California – Okay, it’s really a bad choice, but that’s what was playing when I lost my virginity. I should have gone with Comfortably Numb.
- Nine Inch Nails – Closer – It’s cliche, but I am a creature of that time, and there’s no point in fighting it.

What good song actually has stupid lyrics when you pay attention to it?
The world champion here would have to be The Beastie Boys “Sabotage”. It’s arguably the best song of the ‘90s, and the lyrics are improvised nonsense that nonetheless sound awesome when shouted.
It’s possible that there’s something meaningful to be extracted from Beck’s “Loser”, “Devil’s Haircut”, “New Pollution”, and so on, but after decades of trying, I’m convinced they just sound great and mean nothing.… Read the rest “What good song actually has stupid lyrics when you pay attention to it?”
