Please please tell me you have seen Poor Things!!!

We watched it on the stream a little over a week ago.

It doesn’t really have anything new to say about the Travails of An Infantilized Woman In A Man’s World, but it’s gorgeous, well-performed, funny, and entertainingly written.… Read the rest “Please please tell me you have seen Poor Things!!!”

Someone get ready to comfort the MAGA fucks: turns out Rankin/Bass’s The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974) was —and I believe this is the technical term— woke as fuck.

I mean, they made a Christmas movie where Santa is a narcisstic, entitled old white man whose petty self-indulgence wreaks havoc on a world toward which he is alternately indifferent and resentful.… Read the rest “”

You didn’t enjoy Paddington 2?! Re: Hugh grant reference, of not enjoying any performances beyond Four Weddings.

I spent a few minutes with IMDB, and turns out, Hugh Grant was in three movies that I hold in some esteem:

  • Sense and Sensibility
  • Sirens
  • …and a personal favorite: Restoration

That last one had everything: a cocaine-era RDJ, Sam Neil being alternatively mischievous and malevolent, David Thewlis being intense and kinda awkward, Polly Walker being hot, Meg Ryan being… present.… Read the rest “You didn’t enjoy Paddington 2?! I checked my ordered list of 1,300+ movies, and the first Allen flick doesn’t make my list until #105: Crimes & Misdemeanors.… Read the rest “Why do you like Woody Allen?”

House of Darkness (2022)

There is probably no one working in mainstream media today whose artistic sensibilities are closer to mine than Neil LaBute. I’ve got some Lynch-y tendencies that he lacks, and LaBute’s only interest in laughter is making it uncomfortable, but still… nothing he does surprises me —because I share the same writerly impulses— and yet all of it satisfies me, because he pursues his impulses perfectly.… Read the rest “”

I was intrigued by X because of Brittany Snow, who is not the person I expected to see playing “aging porn star”. But I’m not a rough-hewn horror guy and I’m unfamiliar with Ti West, so it wasn’t much more than a trailer to be watched.… Read the rest “Have you watched either X or Pearl yet?”

I can’t name a single porn star of recent vintage, but I instantly recognized this scene with Aurora Snow and Gauge from… I dunno? 2003?

I think it was the first A2M/A2V shoot I saw, and I remember thinking, “So there are no more uncrossable lines.… Read the rest “I can’t name a single porn star of recent vintage, but I instantly recognized…”
